Are you on a healthy eating plan or diet? Is it right for you? Happy New Year, and congratulations if you decided to embrace a healthier lifestyle.
If you are month or two in, how are you feeling about it now? I hope you are being kind to yourself, making progress and not striving for perfection. Many of us start with great gusto and determination, but by this stage, we are often doubting ourselves and questioning if the new lifestyle is sustainable. ‘Can I do this?’
I’d like to remind you that you can do anything you set your mind to do – dream big! But have you harnessed the power of your mind? Are your subconscious programs in line with your health goal? What is your monkey mind telling you about the changes?
Really healthy eating is not about deprivation, even if it can feel that way at the outset while you say goodbye to addictive sugars and processed foods! You should be aiming to feel full and satiated after eating foods that you enjoy. If this is not happening, how likely are you to retain the change? Set yourself up for success over the long term.
Have you ever asked yourself why there are so many ‘diet’ books and programs? It isn’t just to confuse you! It is tempting to go for an easy fix, but even if such diets appear as success stories – the promise of a healthy life, and usually your ideal weight too – they can’t all be right. We are all individuals, with our nutritional needs depending on many factors like our health, age, lifestyle and so on. There is also a lot of inaccurate or outdated nutritional information on the market, resulting in so many conflicting messages.
Some basics are universal, like eating real food (which is preferably in-season), adequate hydration, eating some veggies, adequate protein and good fat; and leaving behind highly processed foods, most sugars, and hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats and oils. What comes next is focusing on the foods that you and your family enjoy, and can easily buy and prepare. Let your body be the guide! It has an innate intelligence that many of us don’t trust, or have overridden. It can take time to reset yourself.
If you think about it, who do you personally know who has improved their health – and told you it was easy? It might become easy, but initially it is tough, even if you have found the right path for you.
